Mission and Outreach at St. Paul's
Old Bay and crab filled visitor’s senses in Wheatley Hall this last Wednesday as Cream of Crab Soup was featured at Community Soup Night. In fact, those who visited had their choice of Smoked Turkey and Bean Soup, Turkey and Noodle Soup, Green Lima Bean Soup, Chili and Vegetable Beef Soup, as well as the Crab Soup.
Good cooks abound here at St. Paul’s and our monthly Community Soup Nights show off some of their favorite recipes. And it isn’t just soups. Home made bread, fresh desserts, coffee and cold beverages round out the meal for everyone. “I like to try a little bit of everything,” said one visitor this week. “It’s all so good.” St. Paul’s began a regualarly-scheduled soup kitchen about seven years ago. Initially the meal was served on Saturdays, and most of the meals were delivery. Last year, however, the Saturday meals, called “Soup’s on Us,” changed to Wednesday night. At that time, not only the name was changed. Now, Community Soup Night serves meals in Wheatley Hall, to be eaten there, or as carryout. No one is turned away and there is no charge for the meal. Students from local schools volunteer to serve, as well as church members. Usually, between forty and fifty people arrive to share a meal. Some are members of the congregation, but more and more the monthly meal is becoming community-wide. To participate, come to Wheatley Hall on the first Wednesday of each month, between the hours of 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Enjoy a warm hearty meal with us. |
"Mission" is a popular buzz word at St. Paul's. We consider the word our driving force. We feel that to really express our understanding of Jesus' Love for us, we should pass that Love on to others. We do this in many ways. From offering a simple meal to those in need, to giving funding to the drilling of wells in Africa, we express a reflection of Christian Love for others.
Most people in the Greensboro area know where their next meal is coming from. Some among us, however, are not so fortunate. Money is scarce, and food is not always an afterthought. For those people, we provide at least one nourishing meal each month. In fact, we offer this meal to anyone and everyone. It is our feeling that everyone should be welcome at our table. Each first Wednesday of the month, we open Wheatley Hall with our Community Soup Night, inviting everyone to come eat, talk and enjoy each other's company. Please join us for soup, bread and dessert, the first Wednesday of every month, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
